Answer the following questions

a. Describe the expository scene of the story.

Ans. In the expository scene of the story, we see two treasure hunters, Evans and Hooker, sailing in the boat, holding a map in hand, and were seen confused as they did not understand the map. They were approaching a land nearby, the thicker and deeper green forest, a sloppy hill with a little river flowing to the sea.

b. What does the map look like and how do Evan and Hooker interpret it?

Ans. The map looks very old and rough. It was creased and unclear because of much folding. Evan interprets twisting lines in the map as the river and the star as the place where the treasure was hidden. Hooker interprets the dotted line and straight line and the way to the lagoon in the map.

c. How did Evan and Hooker know about the treasure?

Ans. Evan and Hooker knew about the treasure by hearing chit-chat of a Chinese man with his three friends in the jungle and the map he had. It was buried and protected by the Chinese man named Chang-hi.

d. Describe Evan’s dream.

Ans. During their journey, Evan dozed off and had a dream. He got a vision of himself and Hooker when they were searching for something in the forest. In his dream, he saw a little fire where three Chinese men were sitting around it and talking quietly about hidden Spanish treasure in English accent. There was a battle between them and Chang-hi was killed. After some silence, Chang-hi suddenly burst out laughing as a  big devil with a massive black tail in the center of the pile of gold calling his name.

e. What do the two treasure hunters see when they walk towards the island?

Ans. The two treasure hunters saw three palm trees, thick bushes, and dim white flowers at the mouth of the stream when they walked toward the island. They also saw the dead body of a Chinese man which made both of them surprised.

f. In what condition did the treasure hunters find the dead man?

Ans. The treasure hunters found the dead man lying in a clear space among the trees with a puffed and purple neck and swollen hands and ankles partially spoiled state.

g. How did the treasure hunters try to carry gold ingots to the canoe?

Ans. The treasure hunters tried to carry gold ingots to the canoe with the help of a jacket of which one end was caught by the hand of Hooker and the other by Evan.

h.  How were Evan and Hooker poisoned?

Ans. The treasure was protected with poisonous slender thorns and it was indicated with dashes in the map. But, Evan and Hooker couldn't interpret it before. While carrying the ingots to the canoe, the thorns pricked them and both of them were poisoned.
